Sample Video Recipe: Grain-free Sunflower Bread

This grain-free, paleo bread is light, savoury and tastes just like wholegrain sunflower or rye bread. It's very low in carbs and perfect for the ketogenic diet. Full recipe can be found at the KetoDiet Blog.

What is Keto?

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb diet that causes ketones to be produced by the liver, shifting the body's metabolism away from glucose and towards fat utilisation.

According to over sixty randomized controlled trials carbohydrate restriction is the most effective weight loss tool due to its appetite suppressing effects. The benefits of healthy low carb eating extend beyond weight loss and the ketogenic diet has been used as adjuvant treatment for several health conditions.

Our mission is to help people adopt a healthy lifestyle, not just lose weight. Food quality matters and eating nutritious food low in carbs is the best way to achieve your long-term goals.

More than 150 delicious low-carb recipes

My book will walk you through the guidelines and benefits of the ketogenic diet, and it’ll show you how to make more than 150 delicious low-carb recipes. You'll find everything from breakfast to dessert, plus some low-carb staples that are easy to make at home.

The whole foods approach

My book is for everyone following a healthy low-carb and primal-friendly ketogenic diet. My recipes are all grain-free, sugar-free, and gluten-free, and many of them include a dairy-free alternative (paleo-friendly options). I always opt for grass-fed beef and butter; raw, hormone-free dairy; and healthy fats like coconut oil.

Detailed and accurate nutrition facts

All of my recipes include a detailed nutrition breakdown and macronutrient ratio. This will help you stay within your macronutrient targets.

All of my recipes include cup measurements but also amounts in grams, ounces or pounds. If you are following a ketogenic diet for specific health reasons, you should be aware that accuracy is vital for this diet to work. When measuring ingredients, weigh them with a kitchen scale. Using measures like cups or tablespoons can lead to inaccuracies that may impact the macronutrient composition of your meal. All it takes to shift your body out of ketosis is a few extra grams of carbohydrates!

Furthermore, cups and tablespoons for dried products (psyllium, flax meal, etc.) may vary depending on the brand. Using a less-than-precise amount of an ingredient will affect the quality of a recipe - particularly for baked goods - and the final result will be less than desirable.

Detailed Nutrition Data

Total carbs or net carbs?

Although I follow what is known as the net carb approach, you can use my book even if you use the total carb approach. All of my recipes include a detailed nutritional breakdown, listing both total and net carbs.

Not a "zero-carb" cookbook

My recipes are suitable for the ketogenic and primal or paleo diet. However, some of my recipes are not suitable for a "no-carb diet" or "zero-carb diet."

Those who read my blog know that I follow Dr Volek's & Dr Phinney's recommendations - that is to aim for up to 50 grams of total carbohydrates (20-30 net carbohydrates) per day. This approach allows me to get the nutrients I need without feeling deprived and the ability to stick with this diet approach in the long term.

I use non-starchy vegetables, nuts, seeds and berries, which are all high in fibre, thus total carbs. I'm not a proponent of what is known as the "zero-carb" approach which aims for close to no carbohydrate intake with very few vegetables. Although everyone tolerates a different carbohydrate intake, it doesn't mean that a "zero-carb" diet is the best approach for you.

The suggestion that the "zero-carb" approach leads to a higher level of ketones and enhanced fat loss is misleading - this is not how the ketogenic diet works. The main reason why people lose weight on a ketogenic diet is simple: you will naturally eat less because low-carb diets have appetite-suppressing effects. There is no scientific evidence that high levels of ketones will guarantee enhanced fat loss. Typically, a zero or very low carb approach may be desirable purely for therapeutic purposes rather than fat loss.

My Story - Martina Slajerova

Hi, I'm Martina, the creator of the KetoDiet blog, KetoDiet app & International best selling author

Martina's Story

I love food, science, photography and creating new recipes and I am a firm believer in low-carb living and regular exercise. As a science geek, I base my views on valid research and I have first-hand experience of what it is to be on a low-carb diet. Both are reflected on my blog, in my apps and cookbooks.

I currently live in the UK. I hold a degree in Economics and worked in auditing, but I have always been passionate about nutrition and healthy living.

I changed the way I ate in 2011, when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid. I had no energy, and I found it more and more difficult to maintain a healthy weight.

That’s when I decided to quit sugar, grains, and processed foods, and to start following a whole-foods-based low carb approach to food.

My mission is to help you reach your goals, whether it's your dream weight or simply eating healthy food.
